Chapter 58 God is Spreading
Chapter 58 God is Spreading
Ten colors are densely packed onto the map of one hundred countries on Blue Star.
Kerry pointed to the map:
"You said there are ten species this time. It's much harder for God to transform ten at the same time than just two. You're using the other nine to distract God. Do those nine know they're being used?"
The upright ape squatted in front of the map and touched the area marked by the green thumbtack with its front paws—the Waimeing Plains of the Sam Eagle Kingdom, the territory of the Tyrannosaurus Rex.
Then it started writing.
"Tyrannosaurus Rex didn't need to know that its evolutionary path was towards bones and jaw teeth, not an intelligent brain. It would never know that it was being used; it only knew that there were upright apes active in its territory, and those apes would occasionally trade them metal tools for meat. It saw this as a transaction, not exploitation."
Kerry looked at it:
"What about the Grimoire? The Grimoires and upright apes in the Ivan Bear Kingdom have started to cooperate. Intelligence from the Ivan Bear Kingdom says that the upright ape tribes north of the mining area and the Grimoire herds have begun to operate together. The upright apes are responsible for sorting the ore, and the Grimoires are responsible for cutting the ore veins. They cooperate even better than human miners."
The upright ape paused for a moment, then wrote:
"The Grimogonia evolved towards cutting teeth. Its intelligence is higher than that of the Tyrannosaurus Rex, but lower than that of us. It knows we are cooperating with it, but it doesn't know the purpose of the cooperation. It thinks we are helping it obtain food—the ore we sort out contains minerals needed for its bone growth. It sees this as mutually beneficial, not exploitative."
"What about the water dragon beast?"
The upright ape wrote even faster:
"The Water Dragon has the lowest intelligence; all it knows is digging. We pile up food at the entrance of its burrow, and it digs in the direction we want it to, thinking it's its own choice."
Kerry's finger moved across the map:
"Giant millipedes, Anomalocaris, Tyrell fish, giant nautilus, giant dragonfly, and Antiomon—these six creatures are all more intelligent than Suiryumon but less intelligent than Giratina. What do they know?"
The upright ape wrote several long paragraphs of answers.
"The giant millipede knew we were collecting its venom. We used a clay pot to collect the toxins secreted by its stimulating glands, and it let us. It discovered that after we collected the venom, its hunting success rate actually increased, because a high concentration of venom would corrode its own mouthparts."
"Anomalocaris knew we were piling up metal scrap around its spawning grounds. It used the scrap to reinforce its spring-loaded claws, increasing their spring-loaded force, which pleased it. But it didn't know that the scrap metal was salvaged from the wreckage of a human-made steamship."
"The giant nautilus knew we were applying our homemade mucus to its tentacles, which made its barbs more resistant to corrosion. It let us apply it, and after that, its barbs didn't break easily when it was winding around its propeller. It felt like we were helping it."
"The Thales know that we release schools of fish that it loves to eat in front of its upstream route. It swims with the schools of fish and unknowingly deviates from the human course. It thinks it has found its own food."
"The giant dragonfly knows that we tie strips of cloth that we've woven to its cage-like legs, which makes its grip more secure. It lets us tie them so that it won't slip when catching cattle and sheep, and it thinks that this is a tribute from us."
"Anteo knows that we are carving our symbols on its impact bone. It lets us carve because the carvings make the surface of the impact bone rougher and the pressure greater when it hits. It thinks that we are helping it to polish its weapon."
After writing this, the upright ape looked up at Kerry, then looked down and added the last line.
"Nine species, all of them think we're helping them, completely unaware that we're using them to distract God. God's attention is limited; if He's watching ten species simultaneously, He can't focus on transforming any one of them. Last time, we only had two species, and God poured all His attention on us and humanity, crushing us for three thousand years. This time, He wants to crush ten at once..."
Kerry remained silent for a long time, then asked:
"If you succeed, God's attention will be diverted, and then what? The problem between you and humanity will not be solved; black blood and red blood still cannot share the same table."
Upright ape writing:
"That's for later. First, we must wear down God, then we can deal with our issues and yours. The order cannot be reversed."
When Kerry came out of the courtyard, Massa was squatting outside the bamboo fence, holding a telegram he had just received.
"The latest report from the Ivan Bear Kingdom indicates that the coordinated behavior between the upright apes and the Gorgosaurus in the Ural mining area has escalated. They are not cooperating in mining; they are training. The upright apes are using knocking sounds that we cannot understand to direct the Gorgosaurus to cut specific locations in the ore veins, and the Gorgosaurus is doing as instructed. This is not cooperation; it is command."
Kerry took the telegram and read it.
The telegram was accompanied by a photograph—an upright ape perched on the back of a gibbon, its forepaws gripping the gibbon's mane as if riding a horse.
The Grimog offered no resistance and quietly carried it across the mining area.

The Winners' Kingdom, the government.
Lu Cheng closed the record of Kerry and the upright ape's sixth conversation and placed it next to the stove.
Carrie was washing the dishes, while the Water Dragon was squatting at the kitchen door waiting for bones to eat.
"The upright ape was domesticating nine other exotic creatures, not exploiting them, but taming them. It told Kerry it was exploitation because exploitation sounds milder than taming. But the photos from Ivan Bear Kingdom already say it all—an upright ape riding on the back of a gibbon. One species riding on the back of another species, that's not cooperation, that's taming."
Carrie stacked the washed dishes:
"Why did they tame the Gyrodon?"
"The cutting teeth of the Gyrodon can bite through railway tracks, the Tyrannosaurus Rex can smash towns, the giant millipede can poison an entire forest, the Anomalocaris can sink a steamship, and the giant nautilus can stop any propeller... If the upright apes had domesticated all nine exotic creatures, they would not only have an intelligent brain, but also nine biological weapons."
Carrie's hand paused for a moment:
"And what about God? God is spreading, while Homo erectus is being domesticated. These two things are happening simultaneously, which one is faster?"
"Currently, the speed is incredible. The Lesotho pattern is spreading 17 kilometers a day. It took Homo erectus almost 70 days to tame Gyrodontia and reach the riding stage. But Homo erectus' learning speed is exponential. It is slowest to tame the first species, much faster for the second, and even faster for the third."
The water dragon beast couldn't wait any longer and gently poked Lu Cheng's calf with half of its broken fang.
Carrie fished a bone out of the pot and threw it to the dog. The dog grabbed the bone, lay down in the corner, and slowly gnawed on it with half of its fang.
After trying to bite it a couple of times, I realized I couldn't bite through half of it. So I changed the angle and used the tooth that wasn't broken, and it made a crunching sound.
……
Ivan Bear Kingdom, north of the mining area.
Fra stood on the high ground of the mining area, his pipe extinguished long ago.
Before him lay an open-pit mine, where three kinds of creatures lived simultaneously.
Human miners work on the left, the Gorgon herd cuts the veins on the right, and the Homo erectus sorts the ore in the middle.
The three organisms each did their own thing and did not interfere with each other.
Human miners used steam drills, Gyrodonts used cutting teeth, and Homo erectus used forepaws and bronze tools.
Frazier's intelligence chief stood behind him, his voice low.
"Comrade Chairman, the working efficiency of upright apes and gibbones is three times that of human miners. Gibbones can cut ore veins faster than steam saws, and upright apes can sort ore with greater precision than humans. They don't need rest, shift changes, or pay. Our mining committee has already proposed outsourcing some of the mining operations to upright apes."
The Grimog offered no resistance and quietly carried it across the mining area.
