Chapter 191 Unknown Helicopter
After he finished speaking, Gavin chuckled and pulled a fully loaded spring loader from his waist, loading the revolver in less than a second.
He then pushed the cylinder back into the gun, and with the effortless grace of a cowboy, spun the gun around before casually holstering the black and gold engraved revolver.
Gavin patted the sturdy holster, and with the sound of a revolver ringing out, he spread his hands to Edward.
"Speak up, Edward. We'd better not let our ambitions go to waste. You want to be the boss? Fine, draw up the line. I'm always available."
"Forget it, boss—"
Looking at the smiling Gavin, Edward took a deep breath and then shook his head decisively.
After he shook his head, he turned around and looked at the ground behind him.
The five pieces of equipment that were shot down from him still lay on the floor, looking utterly pathetic.
"Why----"
He couldn't help but sigh, then naturally turned around and picked up his weapon from the ground.
Edward picked up the Mad Dog tactical knife and touched the damaged part of the handle with a pained expression.
After casually kicking the already cracked Sig Sauer p226, Edward raised his head with a melancholy expression and spoke to Gavin.
"Boss, my gun and knife are high-quality stuff that I've had for a long time. You have to compensate me!"
"ha?"
Upon hearing this, Gavin was slightly taken aback, then went to Edward's side, patted him on the shoulder, and said.
"I have plenty of good stuff in my armory. Feel free to go and choose whatever you like when you have time. But aren't you going to challenge me?"
"What's the point of challenging me? Are you kidding me? I've already embarrassed myself enough."
Faced with Gavin's persistent questioning, Edward gave a wry smile, then picked up his broken equipment, shook his head as he carried it.
"Your revolver shooting speed is the best I've ever seen, even better than my best teammates. It's like a cowboy protagonist from a Western movie stepped out of the screen."
"With marksmanship like that, I probably wouldn't even have a chance to draw my pistol in front of you."
"Boss, even the top-tier special forces of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council still have to abide by the basic rules. I never deny that I'm strong, but I'm not a monster, you know? I'm not a monster!"
At this point, Edward finally revealed his obvious dissatisfaction.
The weapons he lost were all good ones that he had used for at least several years. Saying goodbye to his handy weapons was not a pleasant experience.
And Gavin—
Listening to Edward's complaints, which included his self-description as a pervert.
He shook his head with amusement, then returned to his sofa, sat down, crossed his legs, and extended his right hand.
"Stop fucking standing there, guys! Can anyone get me a hot drink?"
"The cold air in the helicopter was so strong and intense. That Apache was so old, the heating was as bad as a Canadian fireplace, my hands were almost numb with cold!"
As they were talking, Thomas came over to Gavin and offered him a cigarette in his right hand.
As Thomas continued to light Gavin's cigarette, a tremendous cheer suddenly erupted from all around the hall.
"Wuhu, boss, you're fucking awesome!"
"That's right, boss, you're incredibly handsome, I absolutely adore you!"
"Haha, you idiots from SEAL Team Six, you think you're qualified to provoke us just because you live in SEAL Town? You're far from it!"
"Well done!"
"Wow, boss is awesome!"
As people cheered, they instinctively moved closer to Gavin.
Horst and Hela went off to find drinks for Gavin.
Horst went to the bar to brew coffee, while Hela went to the kitchen to make condensed milk tea.
Since Thomas brought the way of drinking condensed milk tea to the camp, as more and more people work outdoors, many of the guys who get cold have fallen in love with this sweet and warm tea drink.
As for Gavin, he was seen smoking a cigarette and turning to look at Eugene, who was walking into the hall with a gun in his hand.
This guy was clearly just killing time; he genuinely didn't like dealing with potatoes, but Gavin didn't say much.
Gavin's punishment for him wasn't just making him work with potatoes.
In fact, criticizing him in public is already a punishment in itself, and it would make Eugene lose face.
In short, Eugene mingled in the crowd, casually sat down on his sofa, and looked at Gavin while holding his sniper rifle.
Gavin, with a cigarette dangling from his lips, waved to Edward.
"Edward, find yourself a seat. Since you call me boss, you're one of my men. I guarantee you'll have a place in my camp."
As he spoke, Gavin looked at Edward with a hint of admiration in his eyes.
Although the camp already has quite a few field agents, there aren't many truly skilled ones. Even Eugene isn't considered a top field agent by Gavin.
Eugene is indeed an excellent sniper, no doubt about it, but putting aside his sniping duties, Gavin can never trust him because this bastard could do something as stupid as getting drunk during an operation.
Therefore, in Gavin's eyes, the only field operations team leader he could relatively trust at the camp was Martin.
Or perhaps there isn't one at all!
Steve's weakness is that he is too kind. Gavin is always worried that this guy with the Golden Spirit will be harmed by his own Golden Spirit.
As for Anthony, although he was a firepower specialist in the National Guard, he was actually not good at commanding, but rather good at following orders.
Martin, on the other hand, is still addicted to marijuana and always looks listless. But apart from that, as a wilderness survival expert, he is a reliable action team leader.
Zombies are animals too, and Martin's ability to handle the most ferocious wolf packs can convince Gavin that he is capable of leading the squad to survive longer.
In short, among the field agents in the camp, Gavin could only trust these few guys.
But now things are alright, because Edward has arrived!
Seeing Edward looking around, he then sat down next to Sean.
Gavin's gaze toward Edward gradually filled with more admiration.
Wow, the combat squad leader of SEAL Team Six, what kind of talent is he?
Among all the operatives in the world, there aren't many who can surpass him, right?
Thinking this, Gavin spoke to Edward.
"Edward, do you still need any welcoming ceremony?"
"A welcoming ceremony?"
Edward paused for a moment, then shook his head with amusement and replied.
"It's best not to, boss. I don't want to stand out in the next few days. After all, I'm about to become the laughing stock of the camp."
"Damn it, I really didn't know you were such a good shot besides playing ball. As for other things, are you sure your hand-to-hand combat skills can compare to your marksmanship?"
"If possible, I'd really like to spar with you. I haven't had much time to train in the past month, and my body's gotten a bit sluggish!"
"Is that so?"
Upon hearing this, Gavin nodded and casually asked Edward.
"You haven't trained for the past month, so you were on vacation before the apocalypse?"
"That's right, boss!"
In response to Gavin's question, Edward nodded with a wry smile.
He's already quite comfortable calling him "boss" now, after all, someone as elite as him respects nothing more than pure ability.
Gavin's marksmanship and personality had already impressed him.
So Edward continued speaking to Gavin with a pained expression.
"Before this bullshit apocalypse happened, I took my lover and kids back to my hometown in Texas for a four-week vacation."
"On the night the apocalypse broke out, I happened to be drunk with my wife's father, so much so that my wife kicked me out of the bedroom and made me sleep on the sofa in the living room."
"So around 3 a.m., I was woken up by a bunch of random noises in the room. You all know what that kind of screaming is, right? Damn it, the only ones in my house who didn't turn into zombies were me and my wife's father."
"But he drank more than me, and before he could ask me for help, my lover's mother bit him to death in their bedroom."
"I was awakened by screams and roars. Drunk, I found a dagger, groped my way through the dark to check the situation, and endured the pain to send my family members away one by one. Then I spent two days secretly leaving Athens and set up camp near a mountain stream about two kilometers from the town of Poinz."
At this point, Edward suddenly remembered something, and he slapped his thigh hard before continuing.
"Oh right, boss, I almost forgot the important thing. I came to find you to rescue my former comrades!"
"In the past few days, I have met a total of seven people at many farms near Athens. The eight of us formed a small camp."
"However, a few days ago, the zombies in the neighborhood suddenly rioted. When my two buddies and I were searching for supplies outside, we were surrounded by a horde of at least 30,000 zombies!"
"Damn it, the area affected by that horde of zombies was so huge. Even though I managed to break through the encirclement, one of my buddies who came out with me died in the back seat of that Dodge Ram."
"I hid outside the camp for two nights with the rest of my men. Just as I was coming here, we were blocked by a small group of zombies with two bears."
"The zombie bear seized the opportunity to smash my car window, and my passenger was also injured and turned into a zombie, which I then killed."
"Luckily, I shook them off, drove straight through the forest, arrived at the edge of your farm, found a gap, and squeezed in."
"I don't know if the five guys I left behind at the camp are still alive, but I have to go back and check on them. I need help, boss."
"Wait, I've already called you boss, you're not going to just stand by and do nothing, are you? My men are all yours now, a full five of them!"
"So when do we set off? If we're leaving immediately, I can wash my face and get on with the work!"
At this point, Edward looked at Gavin expectantly.
After a brief silence, Gavin raised his watch and glanced at it.
After confirming that it was nearly five o'clock, Gavin looked up and asked seriously.
"Edward, what do your five guys, whose fate is unknown, do? Do you even know anything about their professions?"
This was a reminder of what Thomas and Hela had gone through.
When Hela came to him for help in the dark of night, she didn't mention that Thomas was a master of agronomy and an excellent manager.
So much so that if Gavin had rejected Hela, he might have missed out on a top talent like Thomas.
Look how useful Thomas is now. He not only took charge of the logistics arrangements, but also improved Gavin's living standards significantly, and even took charge of the camp's future agricultural arrangements.
So, Gavin started by asking Edward about the professions of those five people.
In response to Gavin's question, Thomas glanced at his watch and then replied softly to Gavin.
"Three men and two women, all residents of a nearby farm. One elderly man has experience in raising livestock, two young cowboys, one middle-aged woman, a housewife, and one young girl, a nice girl, but still in college, studying literary history."
"Boss, you think the time is inconvenient, right? That's true, it's almost five o'clock now."
"I've been out of contact with them for two whole nights, so one more night won't make a difference."
"If we are operating at night, the complex road conditions can indeed get us into trouble."
"I acted impulsively earlier. I think we should act tomorrow. If possible, I'll get a good night's rest and then I can go find them myself!"
"You yourself?"
Upon hearing Edward's words, Gavin shook his head, then snapped his fingers and said...
"We'll have breakfast at eight tomorrow morning. After breakfast, we'll go together in our Knight XV to pick up your guy."
"If you force it, you can still fit seven people in the Knight XV, but two of them will have to squeeze into the trunk."
"Anyway, we'll act together tomorrow, that's settled."
As soon as he finished speaking, Gavin took out a cigarette and tossed one to Edward.
Edward took the tobacco, lit it, took a deep drag, and then nodded.
"OK, thanks a lot, boss. Now I understand why your guys like you. You're decisive, even more decisive than you are on TV!"
"Perhaps."
Gavin shrugged in response.
"And you're quite good too, Edward. I'm glad to see that your reason and judgment haven't been affected by your bloodshot eyes."
"You probably haven't been getting enough rest these past few days. Get a good night's rest tonight. Tomorrow, besides picking up your buddy, I'll also take you for a tour of Shepard Air Force Base."
"So get ready, man. Shepard is much more dangerous than our neighborhood. If I could, I'd even like to completely empty the place, especially the ammunition reserves and infantry fighting vehicle inventory."
"Besides helicopters, I think we at least need to figure out how to get the ground roads leading to Shepard Air Force Base."
"At least 300 kilometers of road, a journey of more than four hours, passing through at least 25 towns. It's dangerous, but we have to do it, otherwise we won't be able to transport the infantry fighting vehicles and tanks back!"
"This will be one of the key tasks for the field staff in the coming period. The field staff present should prepare in advance. I will explain it to everyone in detail again at dinner."
"Besides that, is there anything else noteworthy this afternoon?"
"Thomas, what's your opinion?"
"Yes, sir!"
Faced with Gavin's order, Thomas pondered for a moment, then couldn't help but glance at Edward before speaking to Gavin.
"Sir, I do have a few things to say. First, let me tell you the news that Edward and Wang Ling brought us."
As he said this, Edward and Wang Ling both turned to look at him.
Thomas then continued speaking.
"After Wang Ling and her group joined the camp, they brought some news from Dallas. They had seen a helicopter in Dallas, but the model was unknown, because they didn't know much about helicopters."
"And Edward, when we first met, he mentioned to me that he had seen a family of vipers flying in the sky."
"We don't have Vipers, so there are at least one or two helicopters that don't belong to us operating near our camp."
"On this matter, sir, I think we must keep it in mind!"
"certainly!"
Upon hearing Thomas's words, Gavin frowned slightly, then pulled out a map from his pocket.
Gavin casually placed the map on the table, took out a pen, and asked Edward a question.
"Edward, where did you see the Viper helicopter?"
"Near Frankston."
"What about time?"
"Around 11 a.m. yesterday, I watched planes fly over the south of Frankston and head north at an altitude of about 300 meters. They acted recklessly and did not care whether they would affect the zombies' trajectory."
Edward answered crisply and decisively.
An elite operator like him is intimately familiar with his position and has a clear memory of it.
As soon as Gavin asked, he answered without hesitation.
Upon hearing this, Gavin raised his hand and drew a circle near Frankston, then drew another circle in Dallas, and then connected the two circles together.
The line connecting these two circles forms a parallel line that is basically parallel to Highway 287!
Gavin frowned even more as he looked at the parallel line that was more than 90 kilometers away from Highway 287, which ran through the farm.
He raised his finger and pointed to the line.
"I have strong reasons to suspect that one or two helicopters were avoiding our operations. They were very close to us, but they never appeared within our operational range!"
"This might just be a coincidence, but I don't believe in coincidences. I prefer to assume they received our broadcast a long time ago, but they simply didn't want to approach us!"
"I don't want to speculate on whether they harbor ill intentions towards us, but we must at least be wary of them. In future operations, every field team must carry an RPG. As for how to use the RPG, if anyone doesn't know, they should find someone who does!"
"As for their location, damn it, their area of operation is too large. Frankston is at least 150 kilometers from Dallas. Based on the two locations we have, I can't guess their approximate camp location."
"Edward, Eugene, Sean, Nicholas, Paul, do any of you veterans have any unique insights that can help you determine their approximate location?"
At this point, Gavin looked up at the people he had mentioned.
Meeting Gavin's gaze, Sean and Eugene stared at each other in disbelief.
After a brief silence, Edward shook his head in response.
"Based on the two appearances of the helicopter alone, it is impossible to determine the pattern of their activities. Moreover, I am not even sure whether the helicopters that appeared in the two locations were the same one, or whether they belonged to the same group of people."
"So I think we can only defend passively for now. Bringing RPGs is a good idea, but we should pay more attention to the sky and pause operations and take cover at any time to avoid being detected by their helicopters."
After speaking, Edward shrugged at Gavin, making a helpless gesture.
Seeing this, Gavin was not disappointed. Even special forces could not possibly find their way to someone's hometown based on just two ambiguous clues.
Special forces are there to get things done, not to tell fortunes. Without sufficient intelligence support, even SEAL Team Six would be blind to the truth.
Gavin nodded and continued.
"Let's leave the matter of the unknown helicopters for now. We can only find them by following the clues from their reappearance when they reappear."
"Besides helicopters, is there anything else worth mentioning?"
"Wait, boss, I have some news!"
Suddenly, Tara, the black woman standing nearby, spoke up.
Upon hearing this, Gavin turned to look at Tara.
Tara gritted her teeth and said with a displeased expression.
"Before Nancy and I joined our camp with our two kids, we lived with a few other people who lived in my gym."
"Although there's a guy in there who disgusts me, they're survivors nonetheless, and at least they can help us with the work."
"The butler complained a lot about the lack of manpower today. Isn't that perfect? Although they abandoned me, Nancy, and the two children, they are still alive."
"So, boss, should we take some time to look for them? If they're still alive, how about we bring them back?"
